NetMarketShare: Linux doubles market share since December 2015

According to the latest stats on NetMarketShare, Linux now accounts for 3.37% of the operating system market. It has more than doubled its share since December 2015 and has seen a drastic rise over the last couple of summer months. Since 2015, Windows has largely stayed around the 90% mark while macOS has dropped from a high of 8% in October 2015 down to 5.94% in August.

Note this is desktop market share - obviously Linux has a much hither server market share.

It looks like a consistent uptrend to me, but August looks a particularly good month so is probably an outlier. Look at the origianl source: [netmarketshare.com ]

As this is based on browsing share, not sales, it is really improbably one month's sales would have much impact, so I doubt it is new Chromebooks. There was also not similar spike last year.

The linked article is a bit silly about ChromeOS running the Linux kernel - of course it does, it is just another Linux distro - it is not a Linux base with a lot of special sauce like Android, it is just Linux.
