For days like this when you're not paying attention and want to shutdown your DEV VM, but repeatedly doing a "sudo poweroff" on your production server instead. About the 3rd time it told me my password was wrong I realized which VM I was in. :)

Another thing I do is customise console prompts to remind me what I am logged into.
I always use lots of red in the prompt for an account that controls a live site.

I do the very same, graeme_p. Color coded command prompts to remind the ID10T behind the keyboard which server and login being used.
