Ubuntu Mobile Operating System Seeking Crowdfunding

Interesting, if they do achieve the figure they're after. Later, they will need a whole lot more to get the system marketed.

The developer of the Ubuntu operating system has turned to a crowdfunding site in an attempt to launch a handset pre-installed with its software.Ubuntu Mobile Operating System Seeking Crowdfunding [bbc.co.uk]

London-based Canonical is seeking to raise $32m (Ł20.8m) over the next 30 days to produce 40,000 devices.

To succeed it needs to raise several times more cash than any other crowd-financed project has done before.

However, one market watcher said even if succeeds, the mobile OS would probably still struggle to gain ground.

If you contribute something like $800, you get one of the phones.

I'd consider contributing but I'm not much of a mobile user, but grateful for the work that's went on their desktop/server.

Currently, $625 gets you the phone, but they have limited numbers at several price points between that and $850

Its going quite well so they have a good chance of making it.
