Interviewed before the announcement of whether he has won the Millennium Technology Prize which is for around 1m Euros ($1.3m; Ł800,000)

Trust is the most important thing. And it's a two-way street.

In many ways, I actually think the real idea of open source is for it to allow everybody to be "selfish", not about trying to get everybody to contribute to some common good.

His co-operative attitude has certainly paid off. I don't know what I'd be doing without Linux.

Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, has been named joint winner of the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize.

He shares the honour with Dr Shinya Yamanaka, a stem cell scientist.

He sure deserve that prize,
the world of the webmasters is certainly a far better place with linux than without it.

I remember when he announced to the world that he had made an operating system that fit on a floppy, and he gave it to the community, an example that should be followed by the big corporations. Hum MAC what is the kernel based on ...

the OS X kernel is BSD.
which preceded GNU, which is actually the kernel of linux.

The OSX kernel is mostly Mach with BSD components. OSX is also certified Unix.

GNU is not the kernel of Linux. Linux is a kernel unto itself. Linux was influenced by Minix and Unix.

There is a kernel called Gnu Hurd but it has nothing to do with Linux.

i got that backwards, linux is a kernel that uses GNU.
the point was actually that linus torvald's work is irrelevant to the mac.

BSD looks like a pretty significant part of OS X.

MacOS X uses a lot of open source components: Darwin (BSD/Mach hybrid), bash, webkit (derived from KDE's KHTML), Python, Sqlite etc. Even the proprietary API is based on an open standard (OpenStep) that has an Open Source implementation (GnuStep). If you use a subset of the API, you can write software that can compile on both MacOS/iOS and Linux or BSD. Interesting that Sony has funded GNUStep.

Android is open source itself, and uses a lot of stuff from other open source projects (a fork of the Linux kernel, Webkit, GNU utilities, and probably more).

If I open a terminal on MacOS or Android, its just like Linux.
