SSH problem, server rejects my admin password

Ok from Linux machine, not from wins

This is quite strange
from my Ubuntu machine using a terminal and command line I have no problem to login and initiate a SSH session
but for years I have also used Putty on wins
well, on three different machines using putty (and even another one that I since removed and cannot remember its name!)
my admin password is always rejected.

What do you think is going on?

This is not happening on my dedicated server, but on a very decent VPS with total root control

Can you compare settings such as

passive mode
proxy
tunnel
ssh-1 or 2

Can you try something other than putty. winscp?

There are two ways to enter a password over an SSH connection. In the simplest method the password is sent in clear text over the line. In the other method a challenge response system is used to verify the password. Your wins client may not be configured to use the password authentication method accepted by the server.

@lammert, this sounds like a very good suggestion;
I am using Putty, I tried to look for any sort of settings but to no avail, it does not look like there is any config in that range in Putty

Via the connection you can open, check the system logs (/var/log/secure) for any clues - or enable logging if it isn't already.

This is a stupid question, but are you really sure you are connecting to the right machine? Are you using a custom port for ssh?

You might be on something, even in Linux if I cd var/log/faillog I got a denied permission
so maybe something is set with only limited permissions?
From there I do not know how to figure it out

More of the same:

No way to get a SSH session from Winds
tried a few SSH applications, tried from three machines.

Support is telling that they even tried it from outside of their network and it works.
But not for me!
I noticed something strange, maybe you could shed some light on that one; If I initiate a SFTP session go to etc/php.ini I can this time reach it but cannot rename, mod it or whatever I always got permission denied.
On another server with the same ISP I was able to mod my php.ini from SFTP
so does that fact rings a bell?
