30 minute boot time on new Linux install

I have recently let my Linux expert go, and now I am trying to learn as fast as I can. I installed Ubuntu on a spare Vista PC that I had, it is about 6 months old.

It took 4 hours to do the install, and now it takes 30 minutes to boot up. I have tried looking in the Ubuntu support forums, but the answers there defy my current vocabulary.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to look?

After rebooting several times it seems to have fixed itself. Still a mystery, since I did nothing to fix it.

I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu, but usually when Linux hangs during boot, if it's not a hardware issue, it's because it's having trouble getting to the Internet.

If you are able to get online once it boots, check that you have at least two valid DNS servers listed in /etc/resolve.conf, and that the machine's IP address is listed in /etc/hosts.

Check the CD you used to do the install. Does it say 'Windows Vista' on it?

ahh vista. the anti-OS. Did you see the news about even MS execs couldnt get it to work?

Maybe it was running fsck (file system checking) on the disks.. it forces these every 30 boots or so.
I've yet to see a way to jump out of it when you want to log in quickly.
