Problem with Linux installation.

I am new to linux and need some help

Hi all,
I tried to install ubuntu 7.04 on my old PC. Everything was going fine until at 95% of the installation a GRUB error was detected.
How do I overcome this error, and also is my PC qualified to have linux installed. Its a really old PC. Below is the configuration:

Pentium 3, 450 MHz
512MB SDRAM

Note: Windows ME works perfectly fine on it.
I tried installing the older version of ubuntu i.e 6.0 but the same error occurs at 95% of installation.

Are you connected to the internet during the installation? (you should be because sometimes you need to download some packets)

You also could try to install the newest version 7.10 [ubuntu.com...]

How large is your hard drive? I wonder if you might be running out of space.

Also, if you downloaded it and burnt your own install CD, have you verified that it has been burnt correctly?

Also, you can definitely install Linux on your PC: I have installed Ubuntu and Mandriva on several with similar specs, but you might be better off with a version of Linux tailored to older machines (Xubuntu, Vector, lots of others).

It would help to know the exact error message text.

See if your BIOS has a feature to disable writing to the boot sector. If it is enabled, disable it. This is sometimes called "virus protection".

Hi,

I have tried facing the same message when i installed 'Suse Linux' on my VMWare (virtual machine).

I tried installing via an iso image. Towards the closing stage it gave those two errors with 'GRUB' and 'initrd' file. I just tried ignoring and saw what happened. It gave an error 'Operating System not found'! :)

Initially i just allocated only 4GB of disk space. I was sure it was because of lack of diskspace only. Then i tried again with 10GB of diskspace in a fresh partition, everything went smoothly.
