If I'm running linux on my desktop, how can I set the IP address for a host (not running named on the desktop)?

Specifically, I'd like to do something like the Windows hosts file where you can drop IP/web addresses into the file and it looks there first. Is there anything similiar on linux for the desktop?

Should be at /etc/hosts
