playing mp3 on SUSE 10.2

I have just installed SUSE 10.2 on my old dell laptop. Luckily I can get on the internet! Other than that I dont really know what Im doing. From what I understand mp3 playback is not auto configured and I must add the decoder to play them. My question is, how do I do this? I need a very,very simple explanation. I dont yet understand all the linux language, terminology and methods. I look forward to learning though!

ohh an bye the way this is my 1st day on Linux :)

The Packman repository [opensuse-community.org] - includes restricted packages like mp3

Hopefully these pages will give you a good start. I'm not a SUSE user, but I'm sure someone else can jump in if you have any more questions.

Any help to point me in the right direction is much appreciated. It's like im in 1st grade and I'm learning everything over again..! :)

Fluendo [fluendo.com] will enable able you to play MP3 files using GStreamer applications such as Totem Movie Player, Rhythmbox Music Player, Banshee Music player or the Elisa Media center. The company has a licensing agreement with Thomson and Fraunhofer and offers the source under an MIT license - free for desktop use.

I use Gentoo and just today recompiled the plugins module for audacious [audacious-media-player.org] with mp3 support. They key bindings(at least on my system) are similar to winamp.

did you see where i said i was new to linux?

do you think big words like recompile and key binding are more to show off or just confuse me more? ha! anyways thanks for trying to help!

Linux is good for Server. For desktop I prefer Mac OS X. Linux is bit pain as it doesn't support MP3 out of box [cyberciti.biz]

I've old computer with Ubuntu Linux and I found awesome software called automatix [getautomatix.com], it does install mp3 and other stuff using one click install method.

I recommend Ubuntu [ubuntu.com] - it has nice community support. Even dell ship the same os.
