Can log into FTP server but can not access files

I can login to my FTP server (Fedora Core 6 and now Fedora Core 7 test 3 has the same problem) but it will not show the files. I set the home folder for the user at 777.

So I can login but nothing else. Previously this wasn't a problem. I can't say what happened to cause it.

Here's the error:

227 Entering Passive Mode (65,7,#*$!,34,142,50)
LIST

Can anyone help me with this?

That's a firewall issue, due to the horrible design of the FTP protocol. Is it proftpd, or vsftpd?

This was a helpful forum. But with Fedora Core 7 test 3 I am unable to update the SE Linux to open new ports. The only ports that are open are the ones I defined during startup.

So I disabled SE Linux and try FTPing again and I get the same message.

I made the user's home directory 777.

Post #20 on that other thread is basically what I did on my proftpd server, and it worked for me. Disabling SELinux is good, but you also need to update the firewall settings, whether it's iptables or some other firewall.

pasv_max_port=1501
pasv_min_port=1510

That will allow 10 simultaneous transfers, you can adjust the range appropriately.
