There isn't any one answer.

First of all, for what purpose?

- For your web server?

- For a test machine for developing your web site?

- For a development machine for developing your web site?

- For general-purpose home use? (Web browsing, multimedia, etc.)

- Some combination fo the above?

There certainly are quite a few flavors of linux that will suite your needs to various degrees. With that in mind, I think the important thing here is that you are new to linux and you will need a distro that is easy to install and will allow you to easily add and remove software from the system in a graphical environment.

I'm biased towards Ubuntu, since it is the distribution that I am most familiar with and I really like the synaptic package manager for software installation.

yep, i'd agree with Jezra - I prefer Kubuntu though, which is just Ubuntu with a KDE front end rather than Gnome - the package manager is excellent and allows easy install/uninstall of programs and for web stuff Nvu is excellent, very like Dreamweaver.

You can download and try Kubuntu/Ubuntu using LiveCD's where you just boot from the CD and it will let you try out all the features of the OS without touching anything on your hard drives.

yes for those two reasons, I am planing to host my website at my own computer at home so I decided to use linux. but I am not sure which version will suit me..
