Business directory minefield

I like to find a few new online business directories each month to gain some easy backlinks, but lately I've found it hard to list successfully. It seems many sites get you through to the submission page only to deliver an error or never approve your listing.

Does anyone have some easy business directory sites they're willing to share with me? I've listed with all the big names (Hotfrog, Yelp, Foursquare etc).

Sorry, we don't list directories here. As the Charter [webmasterworld.com] states:
The focus is on how to find links, directories or other resources and not for the actual listing of them.

Thanks for your reply... but aren't finding good business directories a good way to find links?

Without researching a directory or its listings, I see nothing that suggests they are a good starting point, no. For some sites they may be a perfect answer.

A better starting point in my book is to find sites that my visitors might visit with the idea being that their visitors might find mine interesting. We all develop things that work for us and avoid the ones that don't. I don't see directories that accept submissions as beneficial links. But that's me, for some they may work wonders.

I have recently found myself eating my words on "Directories". Good ones have evolved since my day, and I find they give me traffic and seem to help rankings... but... the ones I look at are very few and far between and probably would not be described as "directories" to the average user. A comparison site is just a directory under another name. Product launch sites are just directories under a modern facade.

Now AI is so prolific, you can expect data drivven sites to grow dramatically... so many of these sites may not even have a submission page. Intsead you should try and find the databse that provides the source data, Often times, this may be based on good schema on your site, which gets scraped, turned into data and repurposed back into the Interweb.
