Where do I start?

I work for a technology based company that is primarily B2B and I want to develop a link building strategy. Where do I start?

We already have press distribution, some publications link back. To me this seems mostly like duplicate content though...

I know of several technology related forums and blogs but what do I do to get them to link? I'd like to participate in conversations or at least have someone of a more tech background participating.

We have an old but still very popular tool but I'm not sure how to convert that traffic

How can I get resellers to link back without possibly upsetting their SEO efforts? They sell our products, maybe they could link back to a broader term (widget solutions)

I'm new to link building. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Put a form on your website requesting link partners. Sure you will get some junk link requests but just by opening the door up like this, you will get decent link requests. If you want to improve your chances greater, create relevant link categories on your link partners page to target low hanging fruit in the market segments where you want to get links from. If you decide to use linking software to take the sting out of managing who has requested links with who, publishing, etc, make sure it's editor-based.

Don't bother with resellers linking back. Might ruin their ranking for relevant search terms. Speaking from experience, resellers and other friendly sites ranking for relevant phrases, anywhere from bottom five to the next few pages is a good thing. ;)

B2B link strategy starts the same as with most other link strategies and that's with the people who buy the product, who research the product, who identify that the company needs the product. Who are they? (i.e. are they male, female, old, young, what position do they hold in the company, etc.). Once you've identified who your buyers are the next step is to identify where they hang out online. The link building follows out from there, that's the open door out of the box.

cnvi, I like this idea! Initially I thought to aim this towards the resellers but martini makes a good point. I don't want to interfere with their traffic if they're selling our product. I should mention we've already linked to them but with their domain name as the anchor text.

Maybe I could direct it at tech writers. Encourage product evaluations and offer a reciprocal link to their blog. Link to my keyword "green widget" and I would link back with a something like "tech news" Any thoughts on natural reciprocal links? Worth the effort?

I have a few tech publications that we've advertised on but I'm not sure how we'd get them to link to us. Most instances of links on these are from forum comments where a someone recommends or compares our products.

Should the OP give away the reciprocal upfront or wait to see if they can get the link without it? What are your thoughts?

Can the OP get in trouble for offering free evaluations in exchange for a link?

I couldn't offer a free evaluation but, I could spell out that back-linking is part of the requirements and create a form to standardize this process. That way I can avoid the reciprocal link.

Any time you require a link you are entering the territory of unnatural links. Tread lightly and carefully. A link can be interpreted to be unnatural when it is not given out voluntarily.

Ah ok, hadn't thought of that. Maybe not "required", maybe requested.

"A link back to the product is not required but would be greatly appreciated."

I would just want at some point in the article about "green widgets" that they use "green widgets" as anchor text for a link.

You got the right idea. I personally never require a reciprocal link but if you ask nicely alot of times you can get it.

Yikes! Read the Penguin threads in Google Search before you start an anchor text campaign. Also check out some of the threads about what constitutes a natural backlink pattern, some in the link dev forum.

Ok, I read into it a bit, thank you for pointing that out! I understand people naturally will link differently. That actually may work out fine, especially because my product could be referred to as a slight variations of "widget" "gadget" or "gizmo" so naturally allowing them to link to it as they please could help.

I'm concerned they will use the domain as the anchor but with recent updates is that still something to worry about?

Don't worry about domain as anchor text. Unless you have purchased thousands of links or are participating in a service that promised high volumes of links in a short period of time, you won't be anywhere close to having problems related to recent updates. Natural volume reciprocals even as domain as anchor text is normal, nothing to worry about.

Don't fear about sector as anchor-text. Unless you have bought thousands of hyperlinks or are doing a service that guaranteed high amounts of hyperlinks in a few months, you won't be anywhere close to having problems related to recent up-dates. Natural amount reciprocals even as sector as anchor-text is normal, nothing to fear about.

You can also post your articles at another sites as one way link system, I am sure this will work if content is specific to your product

^This will work if i am promoting an MOBA game? should i post articles in competitors forums, because the competitors have more traffic and higher PR then my site.

Also it is ok to copy the news for the MOBA game from my competition and post it on my site? or should i rewrite the news instead?

Many resources available for copy back-link look for. You can also publish your content at another websites as one way weblink program.I'm worried they will use the sector as the core but with latest up-dates is that still something to fear about?
