Shoud I promote my Ezine Articles for Back Links

Over the years we have amassed a few hundred articles on Ezine articles. Most of these were written by me and a few were subbed out. As of late, we do very little article submissions. In fact the only article submissions we do are the ones we don't care to publish on our blogs.

However, I was looking through our past articles on Ezine today and found that most of these articles are "grey-barred" and receive little or no traffic. This got me thinking ... what if I had one of my third-world link builders start attacking these articles to try and increase the link juice?

I know the article factories have had their link juice severely "nerfed" post panda, but, for a couple hundred bucks I could beef up all of these articles and change the link text to more relevant and current keywords.

Should I or Shouldn't I?

I would say complete waste of time.

That content repository is one of many that got really devalued during that last update.

Pointing links at one article would increase the value of the article in terms of a ranking hub if you can point quality links to that article. In which case, you might as well point those quality links right to your website.

Every other article link to you would not be counted as the first link principle applies.

The real advantage to building a few back links to your EZA article IMO is that it will help to keep the article indexed at the SEs. Submitted articles (like blog post, forum threads, etc.) often get deindexed once they fall off of the home page, recent posts/category/thread/articles pages, etc. Once the page is only accessible from the EZA archives, they often get deindexed if they have not acquired some back links.

Articles that are above 400 words, original, well written and not spammy can still get onto page 1 of Google search results.

Check your Ezine statistics, find out which ones still have decent performance and focus only on them to see if it's worth your time.

Panda didn't punish entire sites as much as it punished low quality articles on those sites.

FWIW: I see that some squidoo pages are stillo rnaking in top 3 for search (I thought squidoo had been Panda fodder, but apparently not).

so maybe moving them to squidoo can help?

I would say Planet13 that carefully assessing ranking positions on select content websites, web 2.0 sites, and creating a rolling "site id" can help us understand

a) What websites are out there for each "bucket" or function

b) Can be based on pagerank, but better to be based on age, size of website, inbound links and of course ranking of pages

c) The list can be changed over time. This way if one of the websites (ie Squidoo) were to take some kind of demotion, your next month plan would no longer involve them.

I do this type of rolling understanding of potential hubs alot.

ZydoSEO makes a good case for building links to your ezine page. However I believe the weak link for that strategy is going to be the links to that page. If the page is useful and receives links on its own then it's going to rank well. So if you feel that site publishers are going to link to that page because it's useful then encouraging them may help. Just be aware that the traffic is going to ezine, not your site. In this regard I'm leaning more with Cain in that if you can encourage site publishers to link to the same kind of content on your website then that's head and shoulders the better strategy to pursue.
