I just want to throw out there to give some thought whether you have anything you can 'sell' in exchange for a link.

I just got contacted by a private school wanting to buy a 4 letter domain I own that I've been too lazy to do anything with.

After I got over the dollar signs, I've offered them the domain for free - as long as they give me a link for min. three years. They even have a page that's reasonably appropriate.

I backed the email up with some proof that my site is legit (pointed out some media mentions) so that a school could reasonably link to me.

I haven't heard back yet, but I expect they'll bite.

I've actually got a dozen or two 4 letter ccTLD domains that I'm not using. Perhaps I'll go googling see if I can find some decent sites that might be interested in a swap. (and perhaps you can use a similiar technique if you've got domains you're not using).

My answer to almost anything in life that is worth it is

"Whatever it takes"

So to answer your question, absolutely.

Well, they're meeting about the link on Monday. They threw some numbers around between $500-$1000 implying it was a bit low. I responded that the link would be of far more value to me than anything they'd likely pay. So now we're negotiating that I guess.

In retrospect, I should've said "$50 just to cover my costs, and you can have it as long as you give me a link" and left it at that. I really don't want to charge them money even if they won't give me a link. I don't have a use for the domain, I'm basically squatting on it (it's just nonsense four letters that happen to be the school's initials).

But when I get back from pubcon I'm going to review my four letter cctld's and see if there are any orgs out there that might be interested.

I've given just about everything and anything away for a link including vacation rental time.

Nothing is free, and bartering wins many times.

Like the classic Polish guy I am, however, I never settle and always ask for one final 'sweetening of the pot' before the deal is done.

lol. I tried to wiggle a florida condo for a week out of a guy last month. Didn't come to fruition, but only because he was booked :).

Schools are businesses these days. If they offered US$1000 I'd take it and move on. Unless the school was a very good match for a site I had a specific topic on (such as a technical school) I wouldn't care about a link from them.

Yeah, good point. Maybe I'll just throw an offer past them and let them have it. I've got a lot of expenses this month so some extra cash would be nice.

In the early 90's I had a food company (distributor) contact me about a 3 letter domain name I had.
(just some initials) like XYZ.com
We agreed on $2000 worth of food delivered to my home (at cost) which was like $4000 retail.
A week later, steak, lobster tails, pasta, gallons of olive oil, shrimp, it was a palate full (opps forgot to tell wife it was coming) that was a fun week.

Ahh, a good deal if you can get it, although that wouldn't have lasted past lunch time around the old Planet13 household... :)
