OK, here's my daily noob question:

Does creating a Squidoo Lens and getting links from it still have any value?

One competitor ahead of me has a backlink profile of almost all spun articles, and the only domain that he is on that has ANY value is squidoo. (I think Squidoo root domain has a PR7 so his lens page is like a PR1).

He writes about a niche area of art and almost all his other articles are in mega article directories that PROBABLY got nailed by Panda or on sites unrelated to art (real estate, and skin medications, and living with diabetes sites, etc.,)

So I wonder if squidoo might still have some value.

Could be the niche has a lower barrier of entry. That said, there seems to be a hole in Google's algo [webmasterworld.com]lately.

Definitely a possibility.

For what it's worth, the highest ranking sites in this niche have a moz rank of from 40 to 50 (on a scale of 100), so it is not like there are any beauty queens in there.

mozrank/OSE is not a metric I use. My opinion of mozrank is that I do not find the mozrank data useful and I do not have confidence in the ranking score.

Depending on tools breeds confusion, particularly when their results clash with the way sites actually rank. Look at the backlinks yourself and judge it with your own eyes.

I would say a single lens probably has a little bit of value if the content is high quality, and the lens attracts some inbound links on its own via promotion.

Well... I COULD do that, but now that I think about it, that would involve actual work...

If I have to create QUALITY content, I will save it for my own site, I guess....

I see Squidoo in competitors all the time. I've found that there is value, but its pretty limited, and presents a poor time/gain ratio. Its nestled in my resource spreadsheet under the 'I have no good idea's and still need to get 5 links this month' tab.

+1 to CainIV's thought.

Last time I checked the links from the lens were nofollow until the page was over a certain quality (amount, types and depth of content) and was voted on as good by a minimum number of community members.

In the past many thousands of pages were created there for SEO purposes. Depending on who you ask it's either close to 'burnt to the ground' (by SEO abuse) or 'done and still smoldering a bit' :-)

I built one ages ago - not sure I'd personally would invest the time to build any more for a likely nofollow link.

One thing I have heard is that "linkless citations" (meaning your site name or URL without an href link to your site) count for "something" in google.

So I am thinking of going to my competitors squidoo pages and commenting on them and just using my url as our name, since then I would at least be getting a "linkless citation" of our site on the same page as our competitors.
