Quite frankly, there isn't anything unique or new. It's simply learning the techniques of finding places to get links and then methods to get links from those places. And those procedures are detailed in this forum repeatedly, with variations. Outside of that, if you say 'no link exchange request and no buying links', I don't believe there IS anything else.

Yes, I believe there isn't anything new in link building today but applying techniques and strategies in your own. When I see something on the net about new techniques in SEO or something, I don't believe it anymore. They are just spam in my inbox. Link building is a basic thing in SEO, but it's up to you on how you apply it depending on your strategies.

I agree that there isn't anything new being published, I agree with that. But there are new techniques being worked out. I see them in action. I hear them in confidence. And when I need one I invent a way of building links that no one else, as far as I can tell, has thought of.

Ok, here are some ideas I already have in my plan...hopefully this will help engage some of you readers sitting on the sidelines not sharing. :-) Share!

Article submissions (good ones, not crap)
Press releases - only when we have something significant to share
Social websites - engaging in Facebook, Twitter and others
Link baiting - writing a corporate blog & engaging in other blogs to share info
Manual outreach - old school link requests from related sites
Forum engagement - posting in deal forums
Contest promotion - posting in related contest forums

How much time and money will end up spending to accomplish this?

Instead of doing all these things poorly (and you won't be able do do them well if you are trying to do all of them), then why not just spend some money on Adwords, or on looking for affiliate sites to market your services, or advertising on related web sites?

Whatever path you take, make sure that your analytics software (and the people who are using it) are capable, otherwise you will throwing away money on things that don't get results.

...the most effective way for me is and always was, first write content that people are interested in, and second, just as important, make it known that your content is out there and can link to it...

...many times on this forum you hear owner of websites with original content complaining that scraper sites or content farms rank higher as their original content, and the main reason is that well no one knows about it, dont take it for granted that it is googles job to make your site found, and with this different angle you might already come up with many new ideas...

i wrote a facebook app which is quite handy at getting extra traffic. im not sure that links on facebook really count (i dont think the pages are indexed?) but if you can get someone to share something about your site with other people, then your traffic will shoot up.

i've also written a few wordpress plugins which have links at the bottom. as long as you're open about it, and dont sneak them in, then no one minds. and if the plugin is focused on one subject (your site's subject matter), then it will hopefully only end up on sites with the same subject = more traffic.

Get a PR department.

Just analyze other people's sites and see what they do. You don't have to reinvent the wheel. Go after easy, long tail terms first. Once you start getting some traffic, if you have good content your sites can become self sustaining with natural links.

Try to have unique content that high authority / high PR sites like colleges, government agencies, newspapers, radio and TV stations will want to link to without even being asked.

I'll share a concept that you're not doing which BenFox eluded to. Good PR is not just sharing the news 'when something significant happens', you should be making the news. Be proactive, not just reactive.

Have to agree with BenFox. We get a lot of our press releases picked up by the major publications due to the good relationship that our PR team has built over the years. Those sites are mostly high authority and credible sites that crawlers love. All we need to do is make follow up calls and secure the links.
