spent a good day to sip through which sites to reject, a supposedly automated process become manually tedious...

amazed to see a handful sites that this service picked to link to me are one pagers with 2-3 PR. it's like an eye opener to the junkyard of the internet.

I have to admit that I signed up with a linking service and am a little concerned by some of the sites that are considered matches. Not only are they low on content (let alone original content), but the site designs are extremely fugly...

Sounds strange to not be able to tell someone who is working for you to stop providing a product that is not up to your standard.

I would never use a service that forced a link on me, either inbound or outbound... but particularly outbound. You are in fact responsible for whom you link to.

Sounds in this case like they are forcing outbounds on you because they are in effect selling these links as inbounds to someone else. I'd run away from them really fast.

I would remove all outbound links immediately and cancel the service.

Some inbounds will stay in place for now, but eventually they will take them down.

If you want to have outbound links (i.e. for reciprocal exchanges) on your site make sure they are on theme and make sense to your visitors. And don't go crazy with the number of links - keep it reasonable.

PR just ticked 1 up. A couple of serps went up, a couple went down. I'm using this service only as a supplement. so far it hasn't done much harm so I'm keeping it for now.

Inbound links, you take the risk (live by the sword, die by the sword, etc). But there's potential reward there.Maybe Google penalizes you, maybe they don't and you rank better.

Outbound links on the other hand, you've removed any doubt from Google's mind about what you're doing. No way would I ever link outbound as part of a link building service.

I think hiring a linking service needs to be diversified.
