I paid a company to do some link building on my domain and they guaranteed to get it to the top of Google and Yahoo in 8 weeks.
Well, they did manage to get it to the top of Yahoo for several keyphrases but did not get it anywhere the top on Google. In fact its highest ranking is page 47.
The link builder said that because I use Google Adwords now and then it affects the chance of getting my site to the top.
IS THIS TRUE?
There are two options:
1) this company have hidden sources of information and are privy to trade secrets
2) they are jokers
Hint: it's 2.
I always found that what worked in Google worked in Yahoo - but not the other way round. In other words, certain crap links (that Google filters out or down) Yahoo doesn't.

I like to think I build low volumes of high quality links. I do well in Google. I don't do so well in Yahoo, where others with lots of links I wouldn't touch, do rank.
There are tons of SEO resources online and most of it isn't rocket science. You probably know a lot about whatever your site is about, put this knowledge to good use writing great content and doing some linkbuilding through articles on reputable and authorative sites in your niche.
Then if you've got at least basic knowledge of html go and check your websites technique's and add/remove things when needed. Look for <title> and <meta description> tags, make sure there's one <h1> (and only 1) on each page.
Learn some SEO for yourself and you won't get duped. This forum is a great (the best?) place to start.
8 weeks from a (we're fairly certain) not great company sounds to me like they have some factory-line formula one-size fits all approach. That could include things like site-wides, bulk crap link buying or a network of sites.
These are all bad things. Whatever you do, you might even want to consider getting them to reverse what they've done if possible so you have a clean slate to start with.
