I've never read anything to suggest that from anyone reputable, and Google always make it very very clear on repeated occasions that there is absolutely no correlation whatsoever between AdWords and organic.

There are two options:

1) this company have hidden sources of information and are privy to trade secrets
2) they are jokers

Hint: it's 2.

In fact this is such BS on so many levels. If AdWords *did* affect ranking, surely it would be positively? If the company know that AdWords affects rankings, then why didn't they ask you if you'd ever used it before they started? It would be part of their expectations management.

Yahoo is far easier to rank in, at least it was when I paid attention to it. I don't work on very big sites so given its market share (I'm in the UK) it's not been worth bothering with as far as I'm concerned.

+1. I think that's your answer to a lot of things. They've done a crappy link building campaign for you. Yahoo likes it, Google doesn't. So they make up some excuses.

I like to think I build low volumes of high quality links. I do well in Google. I don't do so well in Yahoo, where others with lots of links I wouldn't touch, do rank.

There are tons of SEO resources online and most of it isn't rocket science. You probably know a lot about whatever your site is about, put this knowledge to good use writing great content and doing some linkbuilding through articles on reputable and authorative sites in your niche.

Then if you've got at least basic knowledge of html go and check your websites technique's and add/remove things when needed. Look for <title> and <meta description> tags, make sure there's one <h1> (and only 1) on each page.

Learn some SEO for yourself and you won't get duped. This forum is a great (the best?) place to start.

Also, it might be worth asking the company to provide you with full details of what they did - i.e. what types of links they got and where from.

8 weeks from a (we're fairly certain) not great company sounds to me like they have some factory-line formula one-size fits all approach. That could include things like site-wides, bulk crap link buying or a network of sites.

These are all bad things. Whatever you do, you might even want to consider getting them to reverse what they've done if possible so you have a clean slate to start with.

I agree with murphsy. The site owner should be the one who can best identify the good authority sites for his niche. The best single thing that I ever did to improve positioning was fix a page that didn't have an h1.

My golden rule has always been to build links for relevance rather than PR. Will the sites I link to add value for my visitors? Will my site add value to those who I ask to link to me? Will the sites that I ask to link to me bring me traffic through the links? Good positioning in the SERPS for key search phrases always seems to have followed.
