They are still adding many thousands of sites per week. With half a million categories, many are not edited regularly.

Their priority is "does this category list a good selection of sites that answer the question?", and *not* "does this category list every site on this topic?".

Once you understand that, you'll see why many sites are not included. If you see such an omission, there is nothing to stop you suggesting a site, whether or not you have any involvement with it at all.

So if this is the thinking here, the search engine section should just list Google and Yahoo, since together they cover just about everything.

No. If more stuff is found that is worth listing, and someone thinks it is worth spending the time listing it, then they get on and list it.

That is, the directory grows by editors listing the stuff that looks like it is the stuff that people will want to read, not by people suggesting that their own sites get listed.

So its first come first served. If you're the first guy on the block selling red widgets, then you'll be in the directory.

For the other guys who also sell red widgets, I guess they're screwed unless if they can create a site that has cooler red widgets than the ones already in the directory.

I would say try to submit your site (in the right category) on the page which was edited within past 1-2 months. You will find most of the pages are edited almost more than 2 years ago and there is no hope of these categories getting edited soon, or might be their category editor is no longer interested.....
