I didn't download the toolbars for any of the sites, either, but I'm not sure how that would matter. Except StumbleUpon, which apparently does not allow you to submit without the toolbar. I don't install these for the same reason I'm using Onlywire - I want a all-in-one submission solution. Or at least a most-in-one solution. I have been simply making a local bookmark of the site's bookmarklet. And I hate screen clutter.
Onlywire.com - doesn't work for half the sites it lists, and I think may be screwing up the sites it does "work" with. Are Social Bookmarking sites viewing Onlywire as spam, or is it being over-used by spammers?
De.licio.us shows me as only having 5 bookmarks - that's about 12 shy of how many I submitted via Onlywire. And my tags aren't showing up now either. Great.
Backflip, Blue Dot and Furl all appear to work fine with Onlywire, or as well as can be expected given that tagging is hit-and-miss.
Blinklist and De.lirio.us work with Onlywire, but aren't working in general. Blinklist's javascript UI is pooping all over Firefox 2 and IE 6 on my machine (with no security on). And Delirious can't use tags to save it's life - it looks buggy as all hell.
Ma.gnolia, RawSugar, Simpy, BibSonomy, Diigo, Shadows and Spurl DO NOT work with Onlywire - not one submission has gone through. And what is the deal with RawSugar? If I see the words Web 2.0 one more time I'm going to vomit on my screen; and assuming RS is a bookmarking site only for Web 2.0 sites, why would it be included in the highly generalized Onlywire in the first place?
And what about BlogMemes.net? It's just friggin gone! There's a generic domain parking notice there now!
Socializer is starting to drive me a little nuts, but that's my problem, not its. I mean, how many links ... how many sites do you need? But in general it seems to do what it's there for.
In short, I'm beginning to think the whole Social Bookmarking thing is either
a: vastly over-rated as a time-efficient, non-insanity-inspiring method to build backlinks and traffic and will end up being little more than a fad, or
b: is being strangled to death by spammers to the point where legitimate sites and users are having to deal with lag and weird security restrictions - I had a link to a story about Tolkien's Entwives denied to [I forget which site, but coming from Socializer] because too much mail-order bride spam was being posted (they were denying the keyword "wives").
And even though I might stride a line between being a legitimate and non-legitimate user myself, because I use these sites solely for promotion, I don't use automated software or do "spammy" things. I just bookmark pages on my sites I want people to see.
So, anyway, I'm looking to see if any social bookmarking vets (promoters or end-users) have any insights to offer on this tangled mess, lol. What have been your experiences with the various services. And, as a site promoter, is it just better to stick with one or two sites (like de.licio.us, for example) rather than try to hit every (mostly lame, lol) site out there?
