Homesite 5.5 freezes on new XP machine - extended search does it

I recently set up a new computer with XP Pro and installed Homesite 5.5. My older computer was also XP Pro and Homesite ran like a charm. I depend on it.

But on the new computer whenever I use extended search and replace including subdirectories, Homesite freezes. All I can do is close it through Task Manager and re-launch. I've actually taken to moving entire websites back to the old machine to do this kind of work, and then back to the new machine. My zip drive is getting a lot of service these days!

Has anyone ever run into this, and if so, ever found a fix?

I've experience this but seems to be dependent on the amount of files that are being searched. Sometimes it looks dead, and what I do to fix the problem are:

- Open files 1 folder at a time, or some number of files at a time and just search Open Documents

- I just leave it if ever I am not in a hurry and just go back to it later.

Sorry, my reply is not really a fix, but that's what I do when that happens. I run both XP and Vista and on Vista it's worse, you click on Homesite and the application whitens up. And a dialog box supposed to appear asking you if you want to wait or not and just close the application, but the dialog box takes forever to appear too.

Thanks Benj. That's a work-around I use as well -- when I can. Sometimes there are just too many pages to use that approach.

I never ran into this problem on my old computer, and the new one has a lot more power, so the issue is surprising. I'm still hoping for a fix

I wonder if it has anything to do with MS Indexing Services?

Now there's a thought. I was assuming that the two machines were set up identically, but that's almost never the case. I'll check out indexing and also go through all the settings for Windows and Homesite, step by step, and see if there is any discrepancy I can correct.

I've tracked this down to a reproducible condition. If the subfolders contain an FLV file, then Homesite freezes on this computer, but not on the older one. I still don't know how to fix it, but at least I have a better idea of how to avoid it and get more use out of Homesite on this machine.
