I've been using Homesite version4 for so long... like a well-worn glove, comfortable, met all my needs.

Then upgraded computer and os (was running NT4 on a P3 more years than I care to remember)

... and my fave comfort does not want to run properly.

Time to upgrade my editor to match the OS. I know that...have known it for years... but working on a shoestring these days so looking for best suggestions of what to shop for in free to near free editors.

Yeah, I COULD do NOTEPAD (and did in the first days back in 1995) but while I'm on shoestring I do have other things I need to do each day besides typing hrefs, anchors, or images. Looking for something with link path drag and drops and allows configuration of external browsers. Something similar to Homesite4 with H font, CSS, and image previews. I ask this because I've been out of the loop for some years as regards current editors, and since I'm now running 64 bit looking for a long leg 32 or 64 bit that won't break the bank.

Looking for a list of suggestions that is NOT Dreamweaver or Web Expressions...or whatever that MS product is called.

Have a look at TopStyle Pro - not free, but not expensive, and does CSS as well as HTML.

Best of all, it's written by Nick Bradbury who made the original Homesite.

I got DW4/FW4/Homesite 5 all for $82 (+shipping) at Ebay, but an individual program like just Homesite 5 (or 5.5) would go for much less. You just make sure the serial# is included and you're good to go, including having the disk in case you ever have to re-install again.

I was staying with DW2 (don't use all features and do CSS and PHP by hand anyway, so it did fine) but with DW4 it's SO easy to use the code view that I mostly code from scratch with it now.

I still don't use Homesite though, I keep going back to NoteTab Light (which is free and has all kinds of handy features), and there's also a very reasonable paid version for about $20 or $30.

In theory 32-bit stuff should run fine under XP64 in 32-compatibility mode (WoW) - I've got some software that runs just fine like this on my WinXP64 box. Did you install that software into "C:\Program Files (x86)\" directory? You can try right clicking its icon for properties to try to make it run in compatibility mode (say Windows 2000), maybe this would do the trick?

Lord Majestic... sorry for late reply. I did figure it out. This very early version does run in the NT4 SP5 compatibility mode. My last box was NT4 SP6, originally purchased in 1995 and faithfully upgraded all those years.

I do thank all for the suggestions. This brush with "html editor death" so to speak is a wakeup call I should check out new programs from time to time!

Just went through heck fixing one of my early Qbasic programs that utterly FAILED after migrating to XP64. Program worked fine for 20 years... finally located a compiler that would run under XP64 and read the original code and point out needed changes, fixed it, and now happy camper again. I certainly did not want to reinvent the wheel again!
