Includes seem like a great tool if you start your site with them - I however...have built a site up to almost 300 pages and now want to incorporate several include files per page. If you have read any of my previous posts [webmasterworld.com ]- I was wanting to put several include files in the content sections of my pages so that I can more easily test Adsense ads across my whole site - I also want to have a few include files for various affiliate programs I would like to test.

My question is: Is there a way to insert includes to multiple pages simultaneously or do I have to insert in to each page individually?

If you are using FP2003, the Find and Replace feature is pretty powerful. You'll need to find something around the area where the includes will be placed that is constant (the same across all pages). You would then set up your find parameters from that. Then you would set up your replace parameters to include that static code and then your include code.

If you are not that familiar with the find and replace routine, then I might suggest opening each and every page and insert the appropriate code. Think of it as "spring cleaning" and while you are back there, you might as well address any other issues. ;)

You could easily do 10-15 pages per minute. It's really not as bad as you think it is. Once you get the routine going, you'll be done in no time. Be sure to double check what you are doing periodically, like every 20 pages, to be sure something didn't go wrong somewhere.

Also, if you do use find-and-replace, try copying the pages to a backup directory first, just in case you do something silly that requires a lot of hand fixing (as I've done more than once).

Do the copying with Windows Explorer or a file manager, not FrontPage, and the links in the copied pages won't be altered.

Unless you are married to a lot of other FP features I'd suggest not using includes but using standard SSI code. That way if you ever do want/need to move away from FP you won't need to redo all over again.

Note: If using the SSI method then be aware that FP won't "propagate" future changes in the include page.

Thanks for the great advice. I really could stand to do some "spring cleaning" - so I guess I know what I need to do.
