How to create Banner Adverts

Hi,

I'm looking for some pointers or useful resources on making decent banner adverts - e.g. how to get a message across, how to get a good CTR, pitfalls to avoid, etc (I have no real previous experience of creating banners).

For example I've read that it's not a good idea to have a face in an ad that looks directly at you, as a user focuses on their eyes rather than the rest of the banner.

Can anyone recommend a good resource to start learning about how to create good banner adverts - e.g. for use in traditional banner advertising, affiliate banners, Adwords Display Network and on partner sites?
