PNG color reducer for more then 256 colors?

I love index colored GIF's along with Photoshop's save for web option, so I'm wondering if there is a program that like Photoshop's save for web option would allow me to selectively reduce the colors used by a PNG image to reduce it's file size?

Are you using Photoshop? I'm not sure about other programs, but when you convert to indexed color in PS, you can select the number of colors. The minimum is 3 (I think) even in a 2-color .gif/png.

I start with 8, if it suffers, 16, then 32, etc. You can see what you're losing, and undo until you get the perfect balance of quality vs. file size.

I stay away from automated processes like "save for web" because the automated decision is not always the best one.

Transparency is usually something for GIF's as far as what I work with. The save for web option is not automatic if you change options around and I only use it for non-animated GIF images.

Under Photoshop's Image menu --> Mode --> Indexed Colors I can only have up to 256 colors. If the image has 12,000 colors I want to be able to reduce it to say 9,000 instead.

IrfanView will permit you to set the color depth from 1 to 256.
