Try playing with the colour wheel and map, get a geometrical feel for the way colours relate to each other. There are whole books on colour theory which you can read if you like; and some excellent introductory tutorials online.

One tip is to pick a colour which works well on one banner, then turn the colour wheel ... this will give you the same gamma position but with a different underlying hue.

Don't try to guess hex codes :p
