How to make a 3D model for a product demo that will use Flash

Suggestions for 3D renders?

Here’s the situation.

Someone here wants to have a demo of a product on our website. I will say it is a wrench. They want to show it opening and closing and point out it’s features and benefits.

In the past, I have sent these projects to another company that would “scan” the product and create a 3D render then build out the demo in Flash. This I would then post on the site.

However, I am being asked if there is a way for me to do this in-house.

Does anyone have any ideas? How would I make a 3D model? I am assuming I will need some different software. Currently I have CS3 Design Premium.

Any feed back you can give me to get my research started would be helpful.

There's a lot of of software available for doing this but it's a steep... scratch that... there's no curve. It's straight up. :P Do you have experience working with a timeline or video? That will certainly help.

There's a few decent free apps available, have a look at TruSpaces and Blender.

I am a web designer and I do a lot of stuff in Flash so I am hoping there is something out there that will not take that long to learn.

Now that I think of it I recently came across an offering from Google. That was trialware though.

The Blender software seems very interesting. Has anyone used this before? What's the learning curve like? Any good books for a total noob to 3D?

Has anyone ever done any Ray Tracing? What sort of equipment is needed for that or is that over kill to render a wrench?

How do blender 3D render/animations export to Flash?

Any ideas?

You'll have to work back from Flash whatever works the best... For example with the 3-d animation software I'm using if I want to import into a video I'll render the animation as sequential .tga's using alpha channel. My video editor can import these and will assemble them as individual frames. Works perfectly for overlays.

You could do your rendering directly in Flash, managing movement and perspective mathematically. Examples from Mr. Corbin [adobe.com].

That's a cool article, one I will save. But I am not sure if that will be able to pull off what I am thinking.

I found an example of what I want to do online but I am not sure if it would be appropriate to post the link.
