Small graphics - but still taking long to load.

Have optimised my image, but still take an eternity to load..

It's been really interesting reading here about how people optimise their images/ graphics.

I'm totally in agreement about the relative cost of spedning a bit of time being small compared to the benefit of faster loading /lower server load, less bandwidth usage etc.

When I get my hosting company to run some internal speed tests I get this:

•HTML: 23795Bytes 0.33Sec
•HTML Images: 15940Bytes 2.28Sec (11 objects)
•CSS Images: 0Bytes 0.00Sec
•Total Images: 15940Bytes 2.28Sec

My images are only 15KB but take 2.28 seconds to load?! How can this be? Am I doing something drastically wrong here?

I'm kind of beating my head against a brick wall - I may well be over looking something ridiculous, any input would be appreciated

Those speeds are about what it would take on 56 modem, the tool you are using is probably estimating times based on a user with a 56K modem. Every users speed will vary but it will certainly be much faster on a cable connection, pretty much a blink of an eye for 17 kilobytes.

Hi Coalman, thanks for reply...

This is on a T1 connection! And this is on the dedicated server itself ... the server has a P4 Intel CPU..

I'm trying to find out more information as to why this is so slow.. any ideas?

Definitely looks like a server issue. 15k is not a big total for all your images, in fact it's bloomin low, so well done there.

Contact your hosts with the breakdown and see what their response is...

Excellent - their response is "seems to be loading fine here". I'm not going to misbehave and mention their name here but they used to host webmasterworld! Pity I didn't know this earlier..

Looking into the traceroute - my audience is all UK based.. add another 2.5 seconds roughly for each page load due to all the routing within the states.. ouch!

There's a warning shot if ever I heard one. wishy-washy answers like that are a sure fire way to lose customers.
