many people said image map should not be used...but in some suitation, due to the design, we must force to use a single image file but has serveral different hyperlinks (maybe due to the fact the button is difficult to cut)

so any recommended alternatives?

Without going into a Flash alternative, you could do a css imagemap. There are several different methods, including javascript + dhtml, javascript + css, or just css.

Frank Manno has an example taken from The Daily Kryogenix that you might want to do a search for an check out.

The directions available would probably be limited by your desire to be accessible versus the layout you need to work with.

These days an image map is probably fine SEO-wise - I think all of the big SE's can pull URL's from them. But, if you use one, consider placing text links below the image to duplicate the internal links - that will also help for site impaired visitors.

I can do without agreeing with Stajer, he has said it all. Another point about having text links is that if for some reason your image does not load correctly than you still have a way for people to link to your pages.
As a whole, any option to increase the user's experience and make them want to stay on your site and visit your site again is worth adding.
