Basic help with photoshop

Hi,

I recently got a logo designed by a company abroad. They produced various concepts and did a great job. I chose a concept but asked for a variation of colours. They happily did this for me but I said they could just send me it in photoshop format so I could change the colours myself. I thought this would be better than emailing them back saying 'can you make that blue and red rather than blue and black' etc, etc.

I got the psd file and opened it up. It has 7 layers. I cannot seem to change the colours of the text. Can anyone tell me in simple steps how this is achieved? I have emailed them back several times for some help, but their after sales support is some what lacking, which is a shame because they did a good job.

how to do this really depends on how the document is setup.

If the text is still text (i.e. not rasterized) then you can just select it with the text (T) tool , and use the color picker from there.

Other wise, we'll need mroe info.

Hi,

Yes i've tried to select the text tool but it doesn't do anything. I just thought it would be a case of selecting the text and then selecting a new colour.

Try this:

Select the text layer in the Layers Palette.

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Color Overlay

Click on the color swatch and select a new color.

Click "OK"

A side note - ensure they send you a vector (EPS) version as well. Raster logo's are fraught with issues when you start using the logo in a variety of different media.

Briliant! Thanks i can now change the colours.

I have the logo in .psd, .png and .ai formats. Is .ai the vector format because I don't recognize this extension?

AI is Adobe Illustrator, and <i>should</i> be a vector artwork file (as that's what Illustrator is used for). I say "should be" because even tho AI is a vector capable format, it also still supports inclusion of rasterized images. At my previous job I used to get client-supplied artwork files where the client imported rasterized images into Illustrator and re-saved thinking that the raster image would be magically transformed into vector artwork.
