Problem shooting patterned materials

Corduroy or cross-hatch turns into wavy lines

Camera: Olympus 6050c 5.1 MP

I have a well lit shot of cloth material that's say corduroy or some other pattern like grid or cross hatch. The resulting shot has distortion so the pattern becomes wavy like. I've tried different aperture settings. I'm using auto focus.

What is the correct method for setting up this shot and eliminating this problem?

Google for moire pattern, because that is what this is. Are you sure it's giving you moire in the final product, or is it just on-screen display? This is often the case. What happens is the frequency of the patterns and the frequency of the rendering system (in this case, the pixel array on your monitor) do not align. If you can't get rid of it, I **think** the solution lies in polarized filters, but can't specifically recall. A search will reveal. :-)
