I have a jpeg logo, which I would like to change to a transparent gif - to place on different color backgrounds. The problem I am having: the image looks sloppy as all the original background "garbage" does not become transparent. I have PSP 7 - I have searched the web and found a few differnt ways to do what I want, but the outcome is always the same - sloppy. Any sugestions? Thanks.

Hi, although I have not tried doing this and do not know the steps taken to make it transparent...(which I would like to learn as well) you might try the following.

I would suggest trying a feather selection around the logo slightly, possibly 1-3 pixels and then making it a softer edge by using "selection modify", and "smooth selection" to erase the background you do not want prior to converting it. The smooth selection helps to remove jagged edges. This is available in psp 10, but I'm not sure if it's available in psp 7. Good luck!

Firstly to make it transparent, you need to promote the image from "background" to "layer"

(Go Layers / Promote to layer)

Then using the magic wand to select areas and then delete them, or the eraser to do it manually, cut out the bits you don't want.

Finally go Export / Gif optimiser and export out a gif with the transparecy.

Make sure you save the altered picture as a psp file so that it doesn't lose any more data (every time you open and close a jpeg it loses data making it worse.

By saving as psp it means you can go back and fiddle with it as much as you like.

Hope this helps.
