What is Photovine?

Photovine is a community that's about creating fun and unique collections of photos that we call Vines.

How does Photovine work?

In Photovine, vines connect you with people through the ideas and themes expressed in your photos.

A vine is like a constantly growing family of photos connected through a common caption created by you, your friends, and people all over the world.

Some examples of vines could be: "What Weekends Are Made Of", "Secret Stuffed Animal", "Party People", or, "Love of My Life".

As people add photos to vines, they tell their own stories about the moments, images, and ideas that define our lives in a way that's social, creative, and fun.

Start a vine by taking a photo and creating a new caption, or add to an existing vine. Other people will see your vine and join in by adding their own photo, showing their own take on the caption.

Couldn't leave Flickr alone...

I have absolutely zero interest in labeling images for Google because if you use the features provided...

we may collect certain information about you from your account on the SNS

Or in other words:

Hey, dude - we are not going to ask you what information YOU want to provide - we are just going to ask the other company what information they are willing to give away about you. And we will take all they are ready to give.

I agree in principle, but from a pragmatic perspective... well, privacy is dead. It sucks, we all know it sucks, but it is reality. If you go to extraordinary lengths (avoid all social networking, surf only through proxies, use dummy accounts etc) you might be able to achieve some modicum of privacy. Otherwise, it's over. Your life is an open book. Get used to it.

It caters to those who can't be bothered to type more than 3 words -- and Google's advertising revenue is all about words.

Here's a slogan:

"Photovine - our new means to collect non-word based demographic and somewhat personally identifiable ad marketing data."

Think they'll use it?

looks gimmicky to me. Why would I want to use this. Flickr lets me share my photos with the world. Facebook lets me share them with friend's, this lets me combine them with other people's photos on a common theme. How often do I want to do that?

Here's some free advice for Google. STOP CREATING NEW CRAP.

Work on the interface of the "new" Google, put features like "+", "photos", "video", etc.. all in one user-friendly interface.

I have so many URL's, logins, cookies, and things to keep separate or try to mix myself, (Adsense, YouTube, etc), that I only use what I need, when I need it and am not willing to pollute my existing Google accounts with new "services" that really should just be a new menu item on Google.

If you want to build a portal and the portal has social networking features and they are useful, easy to use, and give me more control over sharing and privacy, maybe I'll try them.

Imagine if FaceBook made users go to "ZuckerPhoto.example.com" and the users then had to set themselves up with new login, then to try to mash the photo sharing with their existing FaceBook account to show "aunty em" a new picture of Toto.

Google continues to shoot themselves in both feet, (the "user" foot, and the "advertiser" foot)...
