Google Webmaster Tools - should I or should I not?

I have heard good things about google webmaster tools but I cannot decide, do I benefit from this or do I give google too much information about me and my web interests.

so..

What are the benefits to the user of google webmaster tools?

What are the potential pitfalls for users?

Well I followed the link, but tbh I am not overly enlightenned by it.

Are there people with Webmaster Tools Accounts and strong top ten positions in competitive keywords?

Is that the right question to ask even?

What I really want to know is, should I join or should I not!?

There is no easy answer to this. It has to be your call. All I was doing was pointing you to resources that could help you make up your own mind.

I did follow the link and tweaked it to get what I think you intended.

I have not yet made my mind up. Perhaps I should try it with a site that does not matter so much first.

I suppose if you don't like it you could leave, but the giving of data to the monster google would have taken place.

I signed up two of my sites, they had some mistakes code wise ect.. after a couple of days one was de indexed (never recovered) another which had #1 rankings were dropped down to position 7+ ect.. so I guess giving too much info to google might be a bad idea.

Oh htdawg, that sounds terrible.

I am knocking on page 1 with two important key terms (pos 11 & 13 at the moment) and feel I just need to do a couple more things right to get on the front page. I can't really afford to do too many things wrong hence my concern about it.

Well I have jumped in. Three of our four sites are now on GWMT. There is some useful data in there. I changed my robots.txt file as a result on one of the sites and it is interesting what google thinks the sites are strong for. Not keywords I would have expected us to be that strong for. Perhaps that is information I can use.
