Could Google Toolbar improve on the Alexa Reporting

I was looking around for competitor intelligence reports and came up with only Alexa, which is much maligned by the majority of webmaster's posts that i've read. [ personally, i find it can be indicative, coupled with "webmaster / market instinct" ].

But could Google surpass Alexa with more accurate results, and would that be a good idea?

Without doubt Google have all of the info that you could ever wish for (even without the need for toolbars), but wishing is as far as you'll get.

I can't see the company that has such a stranglehold on search giving others valuable competitive information.

Google would be insanely more accurate than Alexa if they wanted to release the info but they won't.

The thread listed above has some good alternatives to Alexa.
