When does AMP icon appear in SERPS

When I use my largish mobile to search in Google, some sites show the AMP icon. When I do the same search on my laptop the AMP icon does not appear. Fair enough.

Is anyone aware of what criteria G use in deciding to display AMP icon or not? Is it screen size, pixels etc? Does the AMP icon appear when you search using your tablet?

It's based on the user agent. If you fake a mobile user agent on a desktop, you'll still see AMP content.

As for tablets: AMP content seems to be served to iPhone user agents, but not to iPad user agents.

Like laptops, tablets are usually connected by WiFi. AMP is particularly beneficial on higher latency connections like 2G and 3G.

They probably have plenty of performance data to filter out the user agents that tend to get the most benefit from AMP.

And since AMP is basically a stripped-down version of a "normal" web page, they also display best on small screens.
