How to add AdSense to a subdomain?

How do you connect a subdomain from your main domain to a Google AdSense account? Based on the 2023 update to Google AdSense, it looks like the feature to add subdomains has been removed.

I've tried looking up some guides on browsers and YouTube, but haven’t found a clear solution yet. I did come across one YouTube Shorts video, but the guide only mentioned adding a code or a (.txt) file to the subdomain.

I’m not really sure if that’s enough. Does anyone know the best way to do this?

You can’t add a subdomain directly in AdSense anymore as Google removed that option in 2023 when they switched to site verification at the domain level. My understanding of how this all works today:

  • They verify the root through the DNS TXT record or AdSense code in the head of a html page.
  • Once the domain is approved, any subdomain can only serve ads as long as it uses the same AdSense publisher code.
  • Rumors persist that if the subdomain has radically different content, they might review it separately, but you don’t submit it like we used to.

If you only add the code or TXT record to the subdomain without verifying the root domain first, it won’t work. The way I get it is if the main domain approval is the key step.
