I thought amp has been superseded by responsive, but Google support have recommended setting up an amp site for more traffic. I spent ages getting my site to be same on mobile as desktop should I move to amp?

I wouldn't do it. I tried it once and the results were extremely bad. I also suspect that amp will no longer exist in 5 years...
