Test how many ads will show up in a Multiplex?

I've seen a few sites with an ad that pops up when you start to leave, and that ad is almost always a multiplex. Which makes sense, since that's a high paying ad unit right now.

But at least half the time, when I show a multiplex on my site, it only has 1 little unit in it! I have a large spot set aside that doesn't even collapse to fit >:-(

Has anyone found a way to test how many ad units will show up in the multiplex BEFORE it's displayed? So that if, for example, it only has 1 ad unit, then I could skip it and show something else?

Failing that, any thoughts on how to make the multiplex compete with a responsive display banner so that it always shows the highest paying ad?

Multiplex for me have high ctr but pay only 1-3 cent

Google used to get mad if you gave out real numbers, so I'll just say that the CPC for mine ranges from super-low to average with my other ads, but has the best CTR by far! Almost 8 times higher than my second best ad.

Which is weird when you consider that I have the multiplex in the footer, and it's out-performing the responsive leaderboard in the header! The CPC is 46% lower, but the higher CTR means that the overall revenue is 5 times higher than the leaderboard.

I'm only guessing that the times it has a low CPC is when it's only showing 1 unit, though, instead of the potential 8. Which, of course, is why I'd love to find a way to make it compete against other sizes! I'm just leaving money on the table because I don't know how to make them compete properly :-(
