New cookie standards and banner = impact on adsense

With the new IAB v2 standards are now in force from Google I've installed a compatible v2.0 cookie banner compared to the previous v1.1 standard, and seen quite a few problems since.

First, the number of views on adsense is now far below levels seen on wordpress analytics. Before on the v1.1 banner it always matched. Now it's 30-40% down.

Today on adsense I see "Crawler: Hosting server overloaded" for posts put up since the new cookie banner went up. Also, ads seem very slow to load if at all on some pages.

I've looked everywhere for answers on why a new cookie banner is having such an impact compared to the previous v1.1 banner but no answers. The cookie plug in is "UniConsent CMP for GDPR CCPA (Cookie Consent)".

Any help appreciated or experience since using new cookie banner.

Hi Londonwebsite and Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

...installed a compatible v2.0 cookie banner compared to the previous v1.1 standard, and seen quite a few problems since.
Whenever a new plugin brings unwanted issues along, it is best to check around for a better solution. Have you checked to see that your plugin is compatible with your current version of WordPress? I see there are several choices of WP plugins for that purpose and some are more up-to-date. I'd suggest a look at some of the other choices: [wordpress.org...]

Apologies for the edit but we prefer to educate webmasters to make their own judgements, rather than discuss specifics of any site.

Hi, this is the third plug in I've tried. All came highly recommended and are widely used. One showed refusals and acceptance of cookies in google analytics app but was not displaying correctly on mobile and they wanted a high monthly charge for more manual controls so I opted for another which is well used. The new app is not displaying in analytics.

I figured a vast number of people would have been forced to switch cookie banners owing to Google's changes related to IAB v2.0 and grace period ending 15th January but I've seen surprisingly little. Maybe everything is going ok for others?

What is up with your server? Check your error logs to isolate the cause of a server problem. That should be the first place to check.

The "UniConsent CMP for GDPR" is not widely used. Only 900 active installations.

It was recently updated three weeks ago. Do you have the most recent plugin version?

Is your WP install up to date?

Have you checked for JQuery issues? Try installing the official Enable jQuery Migrate Helper plugin and see if it alerts you to any errors.

Good luck!

I opted for another which is well used.
The plugin you mentioned shows it has only been tested with WP v. 5.4.4 in its most recent version and has very few users as @martinibuster mentioned. It is important in WP to keep your WP install and all your plugins up to date.

The slow server and "overloaded" issue are some important things to address if the idea is to earn from AdSense. Your site is competing with others for the traffic and speed matters.

Thanks for the replies. It is the most recent version of the plugin and wordpress but 900 isn't many installations I agree.

I'm planning to upgrade my hosting package soon.

I'll try the jQuery plug in now and see what it says.

One odd things I've seen looking through plug ins is how many do not mention the new IAB TC v2.0 standard that Adsense now enforces. Many talk about GDPR but seem to be referring to the older standard.

Hi there "the new IAB TC v2.0 standard that Adsense now enforces" - can you pls show me where Adsense says you must use this?

Here :

[support.google.com...]

it says "As a publisher, you are not required to use the IAB TCF v2.0. You can continue to use other means to comply with our EU User Consent policy."

An update on this:

I tried the JQuery plug in but no issues were found.

I tried another cookie plug in but the issue with adsense far undercounting views compared to analytics continued. Do a third to a half of all visitors really not agree to the cookie banner even when full screen?

So the same issues remain. Far fewer visitors logged by adsense, and income far down with cost per click and CPM all down a huge amount since IAB TV v2.0 cookie compliance banner. In response to the post above, "As a publisher, you are not required to use the IAB TCF v2.0. You can continue to use other means to comply with our EU User Consent policy." that is only generic ads and not personalised, which are trash and very poor quality.
