Trying to understand Adsense Vignette Ads

Hi,

Two questsions :

1- Vignette ads (might) appear when a visitor is leaving a page, but, is it leaving a page, or leaving the site? In other words, if a visitor goes to a different page of the same site, is there a "risk" the vignette ad shows ? Or is it only when a visitor is leaving the page to go to another site? (I don't know if javascript can tell if we leave a page to stay on the same site, or go elsewhere).

2- For anchor ads, there is a parameter to add to the URL to "test" it (have an anchor ad to show no matter what), is it the same for vignette ads? is there a parameter which can be added to the URL to be able to see what it looks like?

1. From my testing, vignette ads load between page loads of the same site. I don't recall an ad appearing when exiting my site.

2. Again from my testing, vignette ads appear very randomly, but if you jump between pages on your site, you will eventually get the vignette ad to appear. I'm not aware of a way to force them to appear. The best I can explain a vignette ad, it's like a lightbox or mobile menu screen where the background blocks out the whole screen and only an ad shows with a close button.

I tried vignette ads a few times, but with my type of site, visitors aren't page jumping and loading enough different pages to trigger an ad screen. The randomness was so random, vignette ads seemed like a unicorn. I can only think those annoying sites where an article is spread across multiple pages "load next page", or image galleries that load another page between images, would be an ideal candidate for vignette ads.

I think the idea is to be the less invasive as possible, and to show something only if Adense believes this will really interest the visitor (based on it profile, history, etc...).

A site that comes to mind that loads another page for almost everything (galleries, read more links throughout an article, page pagination for articles, etc.) is "cnet". This type of bad behavior may increase the frequency enough for "vignette ads' to be beneficial.

I agree, the vignette ads seem to be very targeted and not invasive, and I like that, but that also means a certain type of match for a site in order to generate revenue. As I said, for my type of site I had to do a lot of testing in order to get a vignette ad to appear. Not a good match.

After the valuable (as usual) explanations from @NickMNS (in a different topic), I gave Vignette ads a try. And it looks interesting.

I never saw myself one, but, from the stats , only 2-3 % of my visitors are seeing them, meaning , it's not "annoying" too many people, ... and 30% are clicking the ad (hoping this is not accidental clicks) , which suggests it was "interesting" ads. So "annoying" few people, and being "interesting" for those seeing them, sounds a good combo. The targeting from Adsense seems very good (so far).

Also, as a result, low impression with high CTR are resulting in high RPM values that I didn't know exist :)
