I've a community / bulletin board just like Webmasterworld and I'm wondering if I need to give the crawler access to it like metioned here: [support.google.com...]

When I visit my community I see ads when being logged in so I'm wondering if it's required or not.

Are these pages only accessible when you are logged? If so this is odd, especially since the activation of the Brand safety...

As the link explains, the Adsense bots need access or the ads cannot display - so when you created the publisher account and generated your code, you must have allowed it.

The ads are visible for both being logged in or not. Maybe I should test and see what the difference is in earnings.

So it sounds like the page itself is publicly accessible. If so, the Adsense bot can visit it, and ads can be served.
