Is anyone using it? The last time I tried it, there was no matched content at all...just a tiny banner ad appearing where the matched content should be. And, yes, I had div tags to accommodate the larger size of the matched content.

Adsense has been pushing this. I keep getting notices at my account page recommending Matched Content and to allow Adsense the Automatic placement, but I would never do that. I prefer to choose where ads are placed.
