ads above the fold

I was invited to Adsense auto ads. Implemented the code which was just the same code as for mobile ads... thing is i notice they are putting a TON of ads all over my site, including 2-3 ads above the post and fold on mobile.

So basically my site looks like

HEADER
ad1
ad2
ad3
CONTENT

I have no control over placement of these ads and not only is it making my site look horrible, but also putting my site in danger of getting banned.

I also noticed popup video ads which i thought was against adsense TOS.

Not sure what they are doing but this is just a warning to anyone trying this out for themselves.

I enabled Auto Ads yesterday (Text Display, In-Article, Anchor and Vignette all turned on) for the first time and notice some of the same - ad-stacking and way too many ads; though most of them came below the fold (on desktop). But still, I felt dirty about it. I'm running it again today just to see but I think it still is a work-in-progress for G, hence the invite to try. I might have to take my fixed ad placements out to see if Auto Ads does better on its own.

I will say that my account had a renaissance of sorts regarding earnings with Auto Ads enabled. Felt like 2012 all over again :) So there's that.

I'll keep an eye on mobile to see what that looks like today.

That's crap. You cannot change the placement, they are called auto ads for a reason ;). Also, Google has clearly mentioned in the email that they are not responsible for any ad crap on the site caused by beta auto ads.

Are you using manual and auto ads together?

I removed it now... just kept vingette ads.. though because i have the auto ads code (same as mobile ads code). I am still seeing annoying popup videos.

"Is vingette ads showing those popup ads?"

BTW.. blocked everything but the vingette ads with auto ads and still getting the popup videos on desktop.. so it must be. i wish i could go back and not test this crap out for them.

Who cares if they put tons of ads all over? It's called testing. They need to try thousands of combinations to see what works for your site and your page and your visitors. You might see multiple ads but other people might not. Google targets ads to you as an individual so don't get bent out of shape IMHO. Give it a bit of time folks.

I use Ezoic and it does the AI of ad placement and testing. Auto Ads is a beta and they need impressions to gain data and improve. I'm using Auto Ads, so far I like the varied ad placement.

I dunno. I had to stop Auto Ads just now - counted no fewer than TEN adblocks on a page (some were stacked) that I usually kept no more than three on. That's a huge difference and quite the eye sore. I care enough about my visitors to not want that many ads on a page and I wouldn't stay on a site with that many ads-per-article for one second. It's like a blind hacker got a hold of my code and went crazy with it.

I like the idea of what Auto Ads is but it's just not executing as well as it could be considering all of the years of data Adsense has on visitor habits already. I gave it a week to work itself out but it seems to only have gotten worse. CPC and earnings were on the rise but I just don't feel right about earning in THAT way. I prefer quality and longevity for my web properties and maybe that's naive but it's what I would want as a visitor.

I have a question. To use auto ads, do we remove all of our old ads completely? Also, if our ads were in div tags, do we remove those also?

@Azlinda Here's Google's reply:
There’s no need to remove them if you don’t want to. Auto ads will take into account all existing Google ads on your pages.
