Adsense auto-start audio ads.

I have not noticed these before.

I'm working with a page on my site (editing it, refreshing it often) and I've had two Adsense video ads display that have auto-start audio enabled. One was for Disney, the other Clorox.

Sometimes I loose track of where my cursor is while I'm working, so I though possibly I had "hovered over" the ads. But to figure out what ad was playing I had to scroll up several screen widths to find it, so I don't see how anything I was doing triggered it.

Isn't this new for Adsense, the auto-start audio? Have I overlooked an "opt out" setting somewhere?

I haven't seen those on any of my sites. I'm surprised Adsense would have them since I think they're the kind of ad the upcoming Chrome ad blocker won't like.

Well that'll be a big hit in the workplace (sarcasm)

Nothing gets the backbutton faster than surprise audio.

:: insert plug for Firefox here ::

If the owner is very, very lucky I'll manage to hit the Mute button instead of the immediately adjacent Close Tab button.

I had a site that was particularly targeted with these auto play ads at 300x250 ad size. Nevertheless they were the best paying ads. These ads generally do not come from adsense itself, but rather other networks that inject their ads. Because of my waterfalls, sometimes my pages trigger more than 1 auto play audios.

After a few complaints, I eventually made a hard call and removed 300x250 adsense ads from that site. It was a huge financial hit, something like 30~40% less earnings. But I live better knowing that the site could serve users better.

It's hard to see those ads unless a user actually tells you. Specifically, these have relatively low frequency at much higher RPM's, they are almost always CPM based and generally frequency capped per user. It's really good in terms of earnings.

Not just adsense has trouble flagging these, I also notice this type of ads on other networks. Some are worse than others.

Ps. I also believe the google chrome adblocker will almost whitelist adsense ads, even if they are of such quality. But if other networks trigger this...well...

I don't think there's an opt out option.
