While we can largely agree that it is good to change ad unit locations as designs, trends, and requirements change, there is no doubt that with ad blocker usage up to 30% that there is a real impact. There are many other factors, but ad blocking and progressive "banner blindness" surely have an impact.

In addition, the need to minimize interference of the flow of readers in content has made ads a major nuisance to many, just as there are those who change the channel on TV for 3-4 minutes during breaks (or only watch streamed video/audio without commercial interruption, or pay a subscription fee not to see ads for services of all kinds) or switch to another window as an ad within a video plays before the desired content.

Maybe it's just me, but with everyone reporting that the last 2 months suddenly dropped in revenue, in spite of normal traffic, I don't think the problem is with everyone's websites. Something had to have happened to cause a global drop.

Awhile back (2011-ish), I remember reading (probably on here) that Adsense had decided to start reviewing all accounts that made more than $5,000 and find a reason, any reason, to cut them off. I was lucky and slid under the radar, but I can't help wondering if we're not seeing something similar now.

Well that's not really accurate. Many publishers are doing just fine. Revenue from 2 of my 3 sites is up.

In all respect, when things are good many don't post. When things are bad, many come here to find out why and are more inclined to post about it.

Fair enough... maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see. You're right, it's hard to get a fair perspective without ongoing numbers from a large number of people.

I'm also seeing lower revenue...the only thing that's saving me is going heavier on the ads. But for me, there's been a slow and steady drop in traffic across my 10 sites, starting in January. From Fred maybe? IDK, there's no reason that I can discern.

The only other person who has mentioned a drop in traffic is Ironside. His website is in the pet niche. I have 2 websites in the pet niche, and crazy enough, those are the only ones that haven't dropped in traffic. All my other sites are in the health niche.

I just wish I knew what was going on.

For the first-ever time this month my UK is out-earning the USA and with half as many PVs.

Not only that my USA EPC has dropped 17.63% v April and the UK +16.67% v April.

No wonder so many are confused!

I'm pretty sure that my particular niche targets younger people, rather than older, professional people. That accounts for the amount of people who use mobile devices to access my website.

I'm not a massive user of smart phones to access the Internet although I do have an iPhone6 which I use to test my website to see what it looks like on a mobile device.

We all know what our website looks like on the mobile device. It doesn't matter what ads you put on your page always replace it, they are all going to show in the same place on a mobile phone whatever website you are looking at. I just can't imagine people who use mobile devices to surf websites bothering that much with ads. Unlike a desktop where a large area of the website to view, you have to scroll down on a mobile device because very little of the website shows, only paragraphs of text. People are much more likely just to bypass at the ads that fall between paragraphs. However, the guys that are making lots of money are probably doing so more from impressions than clicks because they are still getting millions of hits.

In my heyday I was well into double figures every single day, earning nearly £40 some days. It was almost unthinkable that I would fall into the teens, in fact, anything less than £20 was a disappointment. There are only two changes since then. I'm probably down about 1000 hits each day. However, I'm still getting 2500 hits each day. But it's the clicks that have diminished. I just can't think of any other reason apart from mobiles that have affected me.

I know a lot of people, especially women in their 30s, whose entire lives revolve around using mobile, how many of these have fish I have no idea, but I do know they spend a lot of money using these devices.

All my responsive sites carry only two ads, an AdLink at the start of an article and the responsive at the end of the article. The responsive is is easily my best ad since it changes size for any screen up to about 900 wide I have seen.

CTR on both ads is about 1.5%. If I were still in the millions+ PVS per month I'd be happy however Google's image theft put paid to that.

AdSense as an ad platform has been in major decline for a good 2 years now and it's only going to get worse. In a few years most people will have fully switched across to mobile with every single ad blocked. You can't blame people. Going on a news sites these days with all those god-awful pop out ads is an eyesore. On the publisher side, having to make sure that your content pages have 1000 to 3000 words to please "Fred" is time consuming and even when you get sites ranking, if the ads are junk, what good is that?! I am trying to rebuild large authority sites slowly, but honestly I think I have more of a chance with affiliate sales, rev share etc these days. The AdSense Golden years are long gone.

Absolutely they do

During the week, roughly 50% of my Adsense income is from Mobile (High End Mobile Devices) and up to 80% on weekends when people are at home away from their work computers. people are just not buying very many desktop computers for the home any more.

I spend 80% of my online time on mobile due to my work.

Seeing a collapse in CTR over the last 2 days across all of my sites - 70% less than before.

I've seen the opposite, @glitterball. Sunday I finally increased by about 30%, in what was about to be the worst month since 2009. Monday it dropped by 10%, which was still a lot better than the rest of the month. Tuesday was basically the same as Monday, and so far today looks to be right in line with Monday.

According to the BBC programme "Shop Well For Less" tonight, 33% of UK online shopping is done from mobile and tablet.

Only thing that I can think of is that I added some affiliate links and Google is punishing me across the board for it.
Gonna remove them and see if it bounces back.

It would be interesting to know on what facts you base that statement.

I'm no expert in this field but all the figures I see indicate that Adsense is going from strength to strength. I'm looking at the financial figures produced each quarter.

I also look at the revenue which Adsense generates for my sites. Year on year my income is currently up 20% for Adsense this year.

I don't think you need any specific evidence to make a statement that AdSense is in decline. Okay, some people are lucky and states that their revenue hasn't been affected at all. However, none of these people tell us how many visitors they get, or what sort of website they are running.

I've come to the conclusion that my particular niche (keeping OscarFish) doesn't really offer any advertisers the opportunity to sell specific products. I do get aquatic ads showing, but I don't think people are placed on their on purpose. And these adverts are paying a pittance. Quite often, I'm getting 1p a click from some of my ads. Three years ago things were so much better. But the only difference is more people are using mobile devices to access my website. I really think this has a massive effect on how much you get for each ad, and how people actually interact with the Google AdSense. Mobile phone screens are very small, most people will just be scrolling down using their finger, it's a far cry from sitting at a desk looking at a large monitor with the whole website showing with all the ads placed where they are fully visible. Advertisers are surely going to pay a lot more for an advertisement that is fully visible for a few minutes, rather than ads that are only visible for a second or two on a mobile device.

I've come to the conclusion that if you are really serious about making good money from Google AdSense then forget the old advice about writing about what you know, find a high-paying niche that will offer up adverts that will follow the niche and people will definitely click on. However, I would only do this if I can link to these pages from an established website that does get quite a lot of visitors. I have a couple of websites that have a PR4. I find that if I link to a website that I've just created it certainly helps to boost it up the rankings.

All my other sites are in the health niche.

Are you a healthcare professional, or do you recruit healthcare professionals to create your content?

If yes, then you might just need to better optimize your site and SEO.
If no, then well.. that's what's going on.

I don't know if this is the same for others. But this month, what is pulling me down to the lower of my range of earnings are the "personalized ads".

This month, despite similar amount of impressions, my earnings from personalized ads are 50% down. This is the same when I compare with months of May from previous years.

My contextual ads are slightly up.

That's easier said than done though. Trying to write decent information on a subject you know nothing about will, in many cases fail. Your readers will see through #*$! pretty quickly.

Trying to learn, in depth, about a subject from scratch which you have no real interest in will also be very difficult and certainly a very long term project.

Stick to what you know is my advice. Maybe expand the subject area a bit to include more lucrative aspects. Yours is a website about particular fish I believe. Why not go hell for leather writing a detailed comparison of fish tanks? Really in depth with price research etc. I would think that fish tanks might well be a good market for Adsense.

Water cleaning equipment, feed - anything with a larger market compared to your current one.

My way of thinking is to create a one-page website which targets a subject that has high paying keywords. Maybe you don't know anything about the subject. However, you could do a little bit of research so you can string a few sentences together. Then why not link to websites that are more informative. However, in between the links other websites you put some Google AdSense links. Hopefully then people will click on the AdSense links. Obviously it helps if you already have a Google AdSense account because you can just create a page, rather than waiting to get something approved.

I do get aquatic advertise once Shylock on my website. However, nobody is going to pay a lot of money per click for a fish tank that costs a hundred quid. My 300 x 600 ad unit is definitely the best paying ad. I've got this now embedded in paragraphs of text, rather than in the left-hand column. The next best performing ad in the last seven days is a responsive unit placed between the heading and the first paragraph of text, or possibly under the second paragraph, or in the middle of the article. I think I will ever have to create individual channels so I know which ones are earning the money, rather than one channel for all of them that are on individual pages not necessarily at the top of the page.

Well, this is so far the best month for me all year. I haven't made any major changes. Will it continue? Who knows?

I am seeing lots of broken ads on several of my sites - it's not consistent, but maybe 25% of the time it is not displaying correctly.
In different sized ad units as well.

@Frank not a massive amount from the forum, certainly not as good as some of the AdSense faced in the articles. I would have thought the forum would have done better since it gets more hits than any other elements on the website. But I read somewhere that forums are notoriously bad for earning money from AdSense. I use analytics a lot to keep an eye on how people are finding my site. Nearly all of my traffic comes from keyword searches, I've literally got thousands and thousands of keywords that bring my website onto the first page of Google, most cases at number one. However, people are looking for specific information regarding their fish so they will stay on the forum. I do get a few clicks, but not that money. I suppose I should take that as a compliment.

I just removed a 336 x 280 unit which I had at the end of all articles. In years gone by this used to the really well, was one of the best tanning ads. However, or some reason it doesn't get much activity nowadays. So yesterday I put the 600 x 250 media.net add back in place at the end of all articles as this definitely sounds me more money than the AdSense units.

I'm seriously considering trying the beer.net only to see how it compares to AdSense.

I have been using Adsense for about a month now. Still fairly new to it but I noticed a huge drop off in my Page RPM today and I could not figure out why. Then I checked the ad balance tab and noticed that it said it was under maintenance and my revenue isn't affected. But I used to show an average of 3.8 ads per page now its down to 2.5 ads per page today.

Can anyone help or inform me if they have had this issue.

Earnings today are just dreadful. RPM is half what I was getting 24 months ago, and two-thirds what I used to be content with as a baseline.

I was expecting some improvement this month but it hasn't eventuated. May used to be one of my best months for traffic. Compared to May 2016 I have 20% more traffic and 20% less earnings.

I don't think Adsense is dying but it's certainly gangrenous.

I don't know if is because today is the first day of the Ramadan, but the RPM is really low/grim for a Friday!

Is it possible that Google have figured out how to convert a bigger chunk of monetisable users directly on their search pages (i.e. get them to click on an Ad)? And now publishers are only left with the so-called 'Zombie' traffic?
If so, then the great promise of the web has been destroyed.
