Via the Labs section of my Adsense console and also via email, Adsense has suggested that I try their Auto InArticle ads.

Per them:
>>Auto InArticle native ads are placed at natural break points inside your content.<<

The "lab" they want me to OK will only insert ads on Mobile.

Has anyone else implemented this?

I'm kind of disheartened at the idea of piling more Ads on my pages (I don't know if these are additional ads or else they override your usual ad blocks). But October was the worst Adsense month I've had in years.

I checked OK on trying the lab out. But it involves placing some code in the head section of the HTML. It may be some days before I get around to implementing that.

As a Lab, I guess it only shows on a certain percentage of your pages?

I've had it enabled for a couple of weeks. I may be missing something, but I can't find where to view the stats for just the Auto Inarticle ads.

Strange. My account usually gets beta access quite early, but I haven't seen this one yet.
My best guess is that Google is trying to prepare a solution for AMP. Then a product like this would make sense for the wast majority of smaller pubs, who don't want to create AMP placements themselves.

Please do let us know once you have the results. Very interesting....

I've had this implemented for a few days now.
It supposed to insert extra ads based on current ad density (including ads of other networks).
Maybe I was already optimized to the max. I don't think I've noticed any extra ads.
I haven't noticed any change in income.
What it has done is screwed up my Adsense Pageviews numbers (reduced their count significantly), and as a result has skyrocket my Page RPM value. I've reported the bug. They acknowledged it.

I also asked if just placing their code in the <head> of AMP pages could be a way of showing Adsense on AMP pages without placing any individual ad code in the <body>. I haven't gotten a reply to that yet.

Ok, I've let this "Auto InArticle Native Ads" thing run for 2 1/2 weeks now.

In that time frame my site has done hundreds of thousands of pageviews.
I have the InArticle code set up on probably 95%+ of them.

The Adsense console tells me I have served a total of 20 InArticle ad impressions.
I have the normal percentage of mobile traffic (2/3rds).
As I mentioned earlier, I use Media.net as a second ad source. I guess this is evidence that Google thinks I've already monetized things to the hilt.

I asked my Adsense rep about if this was a way to introduce ads onto AMP pages.
After checking, she said that InArticles was not supported on AMP pages (possibly she meant yet, I don't know).

I'm taking the code for this type of advertising off my site today.
No reason to add any more overhead on pages for something that's not working out for me.

@Broadway, thanks for the update. Are these "In Article Native Ads" similar to the mobile interstitials? Because your numbers seem to line up with mine after I ran a similar test a while back.

I don't think these ads were interstitials. Here's exactly how Adsense describes these ads:
