Adsense Channels and Increased Earnings

Does creating channels actually improve earnings?

I have never bothered to create channels for my Adsense ads. For some reason I found it to be confusing. Does anyone know if creating channels will actually provide a boost to earnings? Does it depend on how popular the website is?

My guess would be that unless you have a high traffic and very well known website, then channels would not make one bit of difference. Isn't it likey true that Adwords users wouldn't seek out a regular website that has channels and therefore wouldn't be placing bids for particular placements. I really don't know so that's why I'm asking. Thanks!

Channels are just a way of controling ads, often used to distinguish ads from one site to another or different sections of the same site, all under one account.

Channels, as you noted, are not necessary. They do not contribute to increased earnings directly.

I use channels to make decisions about ad placement, styles and so on. The extra income comes from my decisions, not the channels. But the channels help.

In some situations, they can.

When you create an adsense channel you can choose to make it visible to buyers. This allows them to target that placement. If you are already attracting placement targeting then this can be used to push up rates (An adwords buyer already targeting your site about widgets might potentially test higher bids on a placement called "Widget reviews - ATF"). Similarly the same buyer might be more likely to bid on impressions on a general review site if there is a "widgets" placement.

Generally adding channels doesn't seem to make a huge difference - placement targeting seems to be the exception. In some niches, or where you are already attracting placement targeting it can help though. It's also very quick and easy to do with no real down-side, so well worth an experiment.
