January and February [webmasterworld.com] have been a disaster for most of us.
I believe that we expect a "Spring miracle" for this month.

@bdhmike I have content.ad ads on some of my sites. I think they are considered native ads. I'm surprised each month by how much revenue they generate. I don't always like all of the ads, but visitors sure click on them.

@nubchai Good stuff, they're one of the top providers as well. Not to hijack the adsense aspect of this thread, but wanted to throw it out there in case other users haven't tried native ads yet.

Content.ad and RevContent are best for health, wellness and lifestyle type content. Outbrain and Taboola seem to work better for more general content - sports, celebrity/gossip, news, etc.

@Ken_b Do you mind me asking how you display your 300 x 600 ads?.
I haven't used the 300x600 size yet. It just wouldn't fit well on most of my pages. The biggest I use now is the 300x250 under the main photo on most of my pages (1,500 +/-).

I used the 120x600 on about 50 category index pages for years where I've divided the column under the photo so the ad appears to the right of text content. That worked great for many years. But when I adapted the layout for mobile I dropped the 120x600 because I didn't like the way it looked on a small screen. I switched to a 320x100 just below the image and above the text content and that has performed about as well as the 120x600 did and it looks a LOT better on a small screen. On those same pages I tried the 160x600 in a narrow left column under the nav/content on some pages with dismal results, but that was a few years ago.

On most of my pages the ads appear near the fold, sometimes completely above the fold, usually the 300x250 will be all above the fold but usually at least partially above the fold at best, that all depends on screen size and orientation.

I haven't really measured, but I'd guess the ads are normally about 400 pixels down from the top of the page on a desktop screen. Wrap the top navigation links and everything else moves down a bit more.

@bdhmike Thanks for the heads up on RevContent. I'm looking into them right now. My apologies also for OT post.

@Ken_b you should try a 300 x 600 in the middle of the page, I think you'll find all fitting quite well, even on mobile devices. I tried to get at least two units well above the fold now. I have to responsive units at the top of the page, one directly in between the heading and the main content, this one displays as a 728 x 90 banner on a desktop, and on a mobile device a rectangle, looks really good. And I have another one in the right-hand column, this displays as a banner on a desktop, and on a mobile device it displays at the very end of the content which I think is really good. I'm going to leave the layout as it is for the next two weeks and see how we go, still a little unsure about how some of the units are going to perform.

Text only, Image only, or text & image?

Text and image. (We earn more from CPM and display ads than from text and CPC ads. I suspect that the 300 x 600 format is working well for us because it's popular with display advertisers.)

On another note - and I would love to see a forum about this: If there was ever a time when website owners need a UNION, NOW IS THE TIME. For many, our websites are a business and serious income, until a few years ago, and we have virtually NO representation.

If you don't like Adsense, then take it off your site. No one is forcing you to run Google ads. And Google is not obligated to pay you what you want them to pay you. They set the rules. If you don't like the game, then find another one that works better for you.

Yes. A union would be feasible if Google was your employer. Google is not your employer; Google is your pimp. You just stand there and look on while Google and advertisers negotiate a price for your services.

Does anyone still use 336 x 280 ad units? If so, do you use them on your mobile and desktop websites?

I do. Just on desktop. Don't have a mobile site. They're my best performing ad size.
